The instruction for teaching students to spell should include incremental and sequential lessons. This approach allows students to build upon their knowledge systematically by starting with basic concepts and moving towards more complex ones. Incremental and sequential lessons help students understand the rules and patterns of spelling, making it easier for them to apply these principles in their writing. This method promotes a structured and organized way of learning, which is essential for mastering spelling skills.

The other options are not as appropriate for teaching students to spell. Immediate testing and assessment may create undue pressure and anxiety, which can hinder the learning process. Exclusive focus on memorization might not help students understand the underlying rules of spelling, making it more challenging for them to spell unfamiliar words. Unstructured free writing does not provide the necessary guidance and practice needed to improve spelling skills effectively.
